Fat Guys are corpulent, heavy Shy Guys. Fat Guys appear only in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Yoshi Topsy Turvy, and Yoshi's Island DS. In Yoshi's Island, Yoshi receives a Giant Egg from eating a Fat Guy. Giant Eggs can't be shot. Instead upon using the Giant Egg every enemy on screen turns into a Star. Fat Guys may also be used as platforms, but after jumping on them they will run faster. In Mario Party DS, Fat Guy has a cameo as Soda Cup and Fries in one of the minigames.

A Boo Guy is a type of Shy Guy ghost that first appeared in the game Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. As its name suggests, a Boo Guy looks like a cross between a Boo and a Shy Guy. These ghosts greatly resemble the average Shy Guy, although Boo Guys are completely pale and lack feet. Instead of feet, Boo Guys have a wispy tail similar to a Boo. As such, Boo Guys have the ability to hover just above the ground in order to move around. Presumably, Boo Guys are the spirits of deceased Shy Guys, although it is possible these ghosts are created independently of a creature’s death (as Boos themselves may not be the ghosts of the deceased, but simply an undead species capable of an unknown means of reproduction). Like Shy Guys, Boo Guys are individually weak, but can prove to be a threat in large numbers, especially since Boo Guys have shown the ability to organize and strategize with others of their kind, as well as operate advanced machinery. It is also possible these ghosts are directly related to Boos, given their similar names.

Like their corporeal counterparts, Boo Guys were allied with Kamek and Baby Bowser’s early Koopa Troop during the events of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island. As such, these ghosts attempted to damage members of the Yoshi clan in order to give Kamek’s Toadies the opportunity to capture Baby Mario. Like Shy Guys, Boo Guys emerged from various pipes located around Yoshi’s Island. They wandered around back and forth to attack the dinosaurs, as did their living counterparts. Boo Guys could easily be destroyed by any attack, including the common stomp attack. Since Boo Guys often continuously emerged from pipes, the Yoshis could eat and swallow the ghosts to refill their egg supplies. Some Boo Guys were stationed inside castles, operating mechanical traps designed to stop Yoshi and his friends. These Boo Guys hid in the walls and ceilings of the castle, and thus could not be defeated by any attack.

Individual Boo Guys operated spiked balls attached to chains. When a Boo Guy spotted a Yoshi, the ghost would drop the spiked ball from the ceiling, hoping to crush the dinosaur. However, the Yoshi would have to be directly under the spiked ball for the attack to be effective, and the Boo Guys tended to simply drop their spiked ball continuously, instead of dropping the weapon at the most opportune moment. Since the weapon was heavy, it would take some time for the Boo Guy to pull the ball up to attempt another attack, allowing the Yoshis to pass safely underneath the weapon. This was the only way to get past these weapons, as the chain itself would actually damage the heroic dinosaurs. Groups of Boo Guys could operate a much more menacing device – a long, spiked weapon that revolved in a circular path. Again, timing was key. Since the Boo Guys operated the weapon at a constant pace, the dinosaurs could time their jumps to pass over or under the dangerous spikes. Lastly, some Boo Guys were stationed in long rows in the ceilings of castles. The chain of ghosts would pass a missile from one Boo Guy to the next, dropping the missile when a Yoshi came close by underneath. The Boo Guys would only pass one missile at a time, and would only bring out a new weapon when the previous missile had exploded. With fancy footwork, the dinosaurs could avoid the dropping missiles, although at times this proved to be difficult. A Yoshi could perform a Ground Pound to force the Boo Guy currently holding the missile to accidentally drop the weapon, causing the explosive to detonate on the ground below. This would also visibly shock all the Boo Guys in the chain. After dropping the missile, the unfortunate Boo Guy would eventually hang its head down in shame, while the other ghosts shook their heads in disappointment. This act would give the Yoshis enough time to pass underneath the row of Boo Guys before they grabbed their next missile and began passing the explosive down the line.

The Boo Guys reappeared in the game Yoshi's Island DS. Boo Guys remained relatively unchanged from their SMW2 versions. However, in this game, Boo Guys were allied with King Bowser, the grown-up Baby Bowser, who had traveled back in time to the Yoshi’s Island of the past in order to capture the Star Children and use their power to take over the world. As before, Boo Guys attacked members of the Yoshi clan to make the dinosaurs drop their babies, be it Baby Mario, Baby Peach, Baby DK, Baby Wario, or Baby Bowser (who the Boo Guys coincidentally worked for just prior to the events of this game). Once dropped, the future Kamek’s Toadies would attempt to capture the crying Star Child and bring it before King Bowser. It is unknown if these Boo Guys traveled with Bowser from the future, or existed in the past and allied themselves with the Koopa king when he arrived in their time or if they already lived in Hector the Reflector's Haunted House and when Hector came he didn't care about their residence there.

Boo Guys reappeared in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. In this game, Boo Guys resided in Toadwood Forest, a region of the Mushroom Kingdom. Boo Guys appear unaffiliated in this game, and would attack trespassers of the forest. During the events of the game, Mario and Luigi traveled back in time to the Toadwood Forest that existed during the Shroob invasion of the Mushroom Kingdom. The heroic plumbers had to fight past many Boo Guys in order to investigate the Shroob’s Vim Factory located in the heart of the forest. Instead of wandering around aimlessly or operating machinery, these Boo Guys attacked by rolling into Mario or Luigi. However, before a Boo Guy attacked, the ghost would split into two transparent copies: one real, one fake. Only the real Boo Guy could harm Mario or Luigi. Thankfully, the real Boo Guy would point to the Mario brother it would attack, meaning the brothers should not have been caught off guard by the illusionary Boo Guy. Ghoul Guys, stronger versions of the Boo Guys, appeared in the bowels of Shroob Castle, the Shroobified version of Princess Peach's Castle. These powerful ghosts proved to be tough opponents for the Mario Bros., much more so than the Boo Guys.

Two Bandits.

Bandits are a tall, larceny-loving sub-species of Shy Guy. Bandits originated from the Yoshi series, although they have gone on to appear in the Paper Mario series as well.

History

On Yoshi's Island

Bandits, along with Shy Guys, were two of the most common enemies in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. They would wander around, until spotting Yoshi and Baby Mario. The bandit would then give chase. If successful, the bandit would take Baby Mario and run away. They can run very fast, and jump on top of small ledges, making them a versatile foe. It took six eggs, three jumps, or a ground pound to dispatch them. For the first three times that you hit a bandit with a egg, they would drop a coin, the next three would give 1-ups. They also hid behind rocks, mushrooms, or cave walls, only coming out to steal Baby Mario if Yoshi got damaged nearby. In two levels, they summoned Shy Guys to replace Baby Mario while the Bandit took off! However, that would be foiled if the Shy Guy was eaten or egged first. In one instance, they even parachuted from balloons! In mini-games, such as Gather Coins and Seed Spit, Yoshi would face off against a Bandit to win items. If the player used a secret mini-game code, the second player could use the second controller to play as the Bandit (thus making Bandit, in an obscure way, a playable character). They were only on land in Yoshi's Island DS, and were the only enemies that took off with babies. Here, they were easier, and though they jumped very very high when they noticed Yoshi, they would not jump when it reached a ledge.

In the Desert

Bandits were common enemies in the Dry Dry Desert in Paper Mario. They sometimes fought along with Pokeys. They would run at an amazing speed towards Mario, trying to steal his coins. When Mario failed to do the defensive Action Command, the Bandit would steal an amount of coins from Mario and run away from the battle as soon as possible. Mario was able to recollect his coins by defeating them quickly.

Plus, the look on a Bandit's face when you guard successfully is priceless. If a Bandit steals coins from you, defeat him before he flees to get your coins back.
Bestiary 434445

Bandits commonly appeared in Rogueport in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. On Mario's first walk in the town, in search for Professor Frankly, a Bandit bumped into Mario, stealing half of his coins. Mario was able to track the Bandit down in a house near the market and retrieve his coins. Several other Bandits lived in Rogueport, namely Larson, Swindell and Eddy the Mask. A team of Bandits known as the Hand-It-Overs, consisting of two Bandits and two Big Bandits, were fighters in the Glitz Pit. One of the Big Bandits, Bandy Andy, was very interested in rumors about the Glitz Pit, for which he was eventually caught by Grubba, leading to the Hand-It-Overs team disappearing from the roster along with the KP Koopas. They were replaced by the Wings of Night and the Destructors for the rest of Chapter 3. Bandits also appeared in the Pit of 100 Trials in the Rogueport Sewers, along with Big Bandits and the Badge Bandits. They have lost their amazing speed.

Other Events

Mario Party 7

A Bandit appears in Pyramid Park of Mario Party 7, but only in Solo Mode. It stole a Star from the Bowser Sphinx and the player's goal is to get the Star back from the Bandit with a Chain Chomp and return it to the Bowser Sphinx.

In Shy Guy's Perplex Express of Mario Party 8, a Bandit is seen in one of the train wagons walking around. When a character lands on a ? Space above the train a Shy Guy will appear, revealing that a Bandit has robbed Holly Koopa's candy. The character must now remember which wagon the Bandit was in. If the character remember correctly, the Bandit will return the candy and the character will receive a handful of coins. A Bandit also appears in Koopa's Tycoon Town. If a certain? Space is landed on, a Bandit will appear in an alley and steal coins from an opponent's investment in the nearest hotel.

Trivia

At the end of World 4 in Yoshi's Island DS, a group of Bandits take a willing Baby Wario away with them.

In the Yoshi's Island games, Bandits are colored blue. In Paper Mario, however, they are red (a color eerily similar to the Coin Bandits). The Bandits in Rogueport are blue, though.

It seems to be easy for a Bandit to move the "face" on his mask. As a matter of fact, this so-called mask may very well may be a Bandit's face.

A Snifit is a Shy Guy with a black mask, and an extended nozzle for a mouth. The extended nozzle can fire bullets (some of which are made from a form of nightmare and are actually produced from the Snifit itself[1]), projectiles, or other objects. Though Snifits first originated in Doki Doki Panic, a game unrelated to Mario, they have since become somewhat frequent enemies in the Mario series.

A simple gray Snifit.

Physical Appearance

Snifits look like Shy Guys with an extended mouth and black mask. They usually wear red robes, but they have also worn grey, green, blue, and pink. They can shoot small black projectiles out of their mouth, known as "Bad dream bullets" or "nightmare bullets".

Appearances

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

Snifits are chronologically introduced in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, where they appear as uncommon enemies in some of the game's various castle levels. In Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Snifits would attack Yoshi and Baby Mario by shooting projectiles at them. The projectiles in this game were oval, instead of circular, and would go through walls. In this game, Snifits could always walk around and sometimes changed directions towards Yoshi. There was only one color of Snifit in this game: pink. Yoshi could defeat a Snifit in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island by jumping on it, swallowing it with his tongue or by simply shooting it with an egg.

Yoshi Touch & Go

Although true Snifits never appear in Yoshi Touch & Go, being replaced by Aerial Snifits, what appear to be normal Snifits appear on the game's high scores screen. They have sprites similar to those of Aerial Snifits.

Super Mario Bros. 2

In Super Mario Bros. 2, Snifits, (shown here to be affiliated with the mysterious 8-bits), are much less common than Shy Guys, and come in four colors: red, gray, green, and pink. Only in World 2 and World 6 were Snifits gray and green. There was only one red Snifit in the entire game (found in World 3-3). This trait was later changed, as most Snifits now are red. In the Super Mario All-Stars version of Super Mario Bros. 2, the pink Snifits are blue. There were only a few changes between the different colors. Green and grey Snifits stood in place jumping and fired, pink Snifits acted like pink Shy Guys (turning around on edges), the red Snifit moved about like red Shy Guys (falling down ledges), and it was smarter, as it could change direction towards the player. In Super Mario Advance, green Snifits were replaced with grey Snifits.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

In Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, three Snifits, aptly named Snifit #1, Snifit #2 and Snifit #3 appear as the minions and playpals of Booster. Snifits #1, #2 and #3 first meet Mario after he defeats Punchinello in Moleville, where they are hunting beetles for Booster. While hunting these beetles, Snifits #1, #2 and #3 accidentally reveal to Mario that "a princess who fell from the sky" is being imprisoned in Booster Tower. Later, in Booster Tower, Mario, Geno, Mallow and Bowser can battle Snifits #1, #2 and #3, all of whom, attack by shooting Bullet Bills. After entering Booster's playroom, Mario would need to try and hide from Snifits #1, #2 and #3 behind curtains as the trio of Snifits search for Booster's lost Mario Doll. If Mario was found behind these curtains too many times by Snifits #1, #2 and #3, he would be forced to battle Snifits #1, #2 and #3 and their master, Booster. If he remained hidden, Booster joined in and found his Mario Doll, but it's too high for him to get so Mario knockes it down and Booster rerwards you with a Amulet. On Booster Hill, Snifits #1, #2 and #3 would try to ram Mario as he raced up the slope after Booster and Princess Toadstool. Mario could jump on the heads of Snifits #1, #2 and #3 to get a boost up Booster Hill. Finally, in Marrymore, after Booster barged into the Marrymore Chapel (interupting the wedding of Raz and Raini) Snifits #1, #2 and #3 acted as guards, making sure no one interupted Booster's forced wedding to Princess Toadstool. After breaking into Marrymore Chapel, Snifits #1, #2 and #3, after learning that Princess Toadstool had lost her accessories, began to search for them and relied on Mario to bring the accessories they had found to Princess Toadstool. During the battle against Raspberry, Snifits #1, #2 and #3 and Booster would appear; it was Snifits #1, #2 and #3 who inadvertantly destroyed Raspberry for Mario, after the trio convinced Booster to devour the living confectionary. A Snifit can later be seen in Seaside Town, acting as the manager of Beetles Are Us. Several dozen Snifits also make a small cameo in the ending cinematic of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, with the entire audience of Booster's wedding to Valentina being composed of Snifits. Also Snifit #4, #5, #6, and #7 was obtainable by Mario and his team getting beat by Apprentices in Booster Pass

Snifits appear in several installments of the Mario Party series, such as in Mario Party 3, where one appears as the partner of Princess Daisy in the game's Duel Mode. This is the stats of him in the Duel Mode:

Mario Kart Series

Snifits have always been rare sights in Mario Kart games, and they did not debut in the series until Mario Kart: Super Circuit. In that game, they only made a minor cameo appearance in the Sunset Wilds course, where they could be viewed alongside other semi-obscure enemies on totem pole obstacles. Their next and last appearance in the series was Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, where they made another small cameo as characters in the audience of Waluigi Stadium.

Mario & Luigi Series

Standard Snifits have technically not appeared in the Mario & Luigi series, but it appears to be traditional for debuting Snifit subspecies to appear. For instance, during their Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga adventure, Mario and Luigi met up with the laser-emitting Laser Snifits (actually Woohoo Hooniversity's transformed Beanish professors), the cactus-like, spike-shooting Spiky Snifits, and the ice-shooting Ice Snifits. In contrast to this handful of subspecies in the prequel, Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time saw only one Snifit subspecies, the Snifaros, who are notable for fighting alongside completely normal (though never named) Snifits.

Cartoons

Snifits made several appearances in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, where they were most often portrayed as the minions of King Koopa and as shock troops of the Koopa Pack. In some of their appearances in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, such as in "The Unzappables", Snifits were used in a manner similar to hand-held machine guns.

Publications

Snifits were also featured in several issues of Nintendo Comics System, where they appeared to be high-ranking minions of Bowser, as they are shown to command and train his Shy Guy troops. One particular, unnamed Snifit was featured prominantly in the Nintendo Comics System issue "Duh Stoopid Bomb!", where the Snifit, after accidentally becoming super-intelligent after being caught in the explosion of a Smart Bomb, usurps Bowser of his armies. In Nintendo Power's Super Mario Adventures comic serial, a Snifit can be seen among the attendees to Bowser's forced wedding to Princess Toadstool.

Movie

Snifits also appeared in the Super Mario Bros. movie, where they are shown to be the garbagemen of Dinohatten, instead of soldiers in King Koopa's army, cleaning sludge with the use of a vehicle referred to as a Sludge Gulper.

Yoshi's Island DS had fire-breathing Snifits, but they are misnamed Zeus Guys.

Shy Guys are timid troublemakers that wear robes and masks. They first appeared in the non-Mario game Doki Doki Panic. They originally worked for Wart in the dreamworld Subcon. The Shy Guys are common enemies in the Yoshi series. In later games, Shy Guys join in some social activities like sports and parties.

Appearances

Battle for Yoshi's Island

Shy Guys' first chronological appearance was in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, where they were known as Shy-Guys. Here they were extremely common and weak enemies, simply walking forward, making it easy for Yoshi to swallow them and turn them into Eggs. If they touch Yoshi, Baby Mario will go flying off of his back. Shy Guys would often appear out of Pipes until Yoshi got six eggs. The colors that Shy Guys appeared in were red, yellow, green, and magenta.

Return to Yoshi's Island

Shy Guys also appeared in Yoshi's Island DS, once again, as very common and weak enemies. Yoshi could use any tactic to defeat them: jumping, egg-throwing, or swallowing. Shy Guys in this game played virtually the same role as they did in Yoshi's Island. Other than being common enemies, Shy Guys also had their own section in the Island Museum. Yoshi could view the different types of Shy Guys in that section, though Shy Guys that do not wander on land, such as Tube Guys, were only in the marine section. Blue shy guys appeared here, as well as all of the colors from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.

Fighting with Yoshi again...

Shy Guys reappear in Yoshi Touch & Go. They are vulnerable to all attacks and are worth a Yellow Coin. In this game, like all the other enemies, bumping into a Shy guy caused an instant Game Over.

Nightmares in Dreamland

Shy Guys appeared frequently in Super Mario Bros. 2. In this game they worked for Wart, and would walk in whatever direction Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool or Toad happened to be in. They could be easily disposed of by being picked up and thrown. They often appeared out of Vases. They came in red and pink (or in the SNES and GBA versions blue). In Super Mario Advance, the GBA remake, the pink shy guys became blue. Also, in Super Mario Advance, Big Shy Guys were introduced.

Coming from Another Dimension

A Shy Guy in Super Mario RPG.

In Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Shy Guys known as Shysters worked for the Smithy Gang. They helped Mack invade Mushroom Kingdom and the castle. Different, mechanical versions of these Shy Guys named Shypers and Springers were also found in the alternate dimension of Smithy's Factory. More traditional Shy Guys also appeared throughout the world of the game, at places such as the Rose Way, where they sat on top of Treasure Boxes, manned Boards, or fought alongside Lakitus (who would lower them towards Mario and Mallow with a fishing pole). Sling Shies (stronger versions of Shy Guys) also worked for Valentina in Nimbus Land and Shy Rangers often lurked the undergrounds of Pipe Vault.

Saved By an Old Enemy

A bunch of Shy Guys appeared to be allies with Raphael the Raven in Tetris Attack. A spell was cast on all of them to work for Bowser. They appeared in the 8th level, and were saved by Yoshi.

The Story Book Crisis

In Yoshi's Story, Shy Guys were once again common enemies, walking forward and backward. Woozy Guys from Super Mario World: Yoshi's Island had disappeared, although more varieties rose up; some Shy Guys are seen to carry Fruit or hide in trees. To defeat the Shy Guys that are in trees, Yoshi must Ground Pound near the tree they are hiding in, causing them to fall out. Additionally, if Yoshi Ground Pounds near a Shy Guy, its color will change. If different colored Yoshis eat a Shy Guy with the same color, they will be awarded with three petals instead of one. This game also introduces the first "good" Shy Guy, the White Shy Guy. Shy Guys have voices in this game; they can be distinctly heard saying "Hei-Ho" (their Japanese name) and other sounds as well.

Paper Guys

Shy Guys were semi-common enemies in Paper Mario. After Mario returns from Forever Forest, he finds Toad Town overrun by Shy Guys. He can hit the enemies with his Hammer to make them run out of town. Once Mario discovers Shy Guy's Toy Box (the secret hide-out of the Shy Guys) they can be fought as normal enemies. They have two main attacks: They can simply tackle Mario (2 damage), or they can do an acrobatic attack, dealing 3 hitpoints of damage and bowing to an unseen but not unheard crowd. During the ending cinema of the game some Shy Guys can be seen talking with Watt, implying that they have changed their ways. [edit] Stats HP: 7

Dead, But Moving

In Luigi's Mansion, Shy Guys reappeared as ghosts with pitchforks (likely a reference to Beezos). To defeat them, Luigi had to suck up the Shy Guy's mask before he could suck it into his vacuum. Strangely, this is the only type of Shy Guy that has been seen with its mask off. Also, even with the mask off, only its eyes are visible.

Audience Members

Although Shy Guys were not actual enemies in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, they did appear in the Audience of most of the battles, and a few statues of Shy Guys also appeared on the Poshley Heights fountain. Occasionally, if part of the audience, Shy Guys will run onto the backstage and cause pieces of the set to fall on Mario or his enemies. Shy Guys will give Mario Star Power along with the other audience members when he performs a move correctly. They also appear in the audience of Super Paper Mario when a Stylish Move is performed. It is interesting to note that the name Heihoo, which is Japanese for "Shy Guy," appears alongside other scrapped enemy names (among which are also Faia Heihoo "Fire Shy Guy", Komando Heihoo "Commando Shy Guy", and Burakku Heihoo "Black Shy Guy") in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door's coding, indicating that Shy Guys were once going to appear as enemies in that game,[1] although it is unknown if they were ever going to play any more major role than their final one in Super Paper Mario.

Tennis Guy

A Shy Guy was an unlockable character in Mario Tennis for the Nintendo 64. This is the first time a Shy Guy was ever playable. Shy Guy came back for another round in Mario Power Tennis, but this time was available from the start. For its power move, he does a Spear Guy-type dance, gets a spear, and electrifies the ball. When it won a Singles Tournament, a cut-scene would play. During this, it would walk up to to podium with the trophy on while Luigi would be there applauding it. Accidentally, Shy Guy trips over a step on the small staircase and his mask falls off. The screen doesn't show what it looks like without his mask but an astonished Luigi sees it and just stands there with his mouth hanging wide open. Shy Guy quickly puts its mask back on, takes the trophy and walks off of the podium, thus ending the cut-scene. This implies that Shy Guys probably wear masks because they are hiding something very scary or disturbing.

Kart Guy

In Mario Kart: Double Dash!! Shy Guys appear ice-skating in Sherbet Land, acting as obstacles for the racers. A statue of two Shy Guys can be seen in the background of Baby Park, and they appear in the audience of Waluigi Stadium. A Shy Guy was playable in the download play version of Mario Kart DS, with colors such as white, black, green, light blue, dark blue, red, yellow, pink, and a rumored rainbow color, later proven untrue. Also, on the Action Replay DS Card, there was a cheat where the player could press select to play as the said Shy Guy. In Mario Kart Wii, Shy guys appear as spectators and stage hazards on various tracks. In the city section of Moonview Highway, the Shy Guy emblem can be seen on the guard rails. Also, cyan/teal shy guys appeared on the sidelines, colors that had never been seen before on a basic shy guy.

Partyin' Guy

Shy Guys appear in the Mario Party series (mainly in the minigames). In this series Shy Guys are friends of the Mario cast. In Mario Party 4 a Shy Guy (with Toad, a Boo, a Goomba and a Koopa Troopa) find the mystical Party Cube, with which they can create parties and game boards. In this game Shy Guy wears an Indiana Jones-like costume. And it has its own game board: Shy Guy's Jungle Jam. A single, friendly, Shy Guy appears as the conductor of Shroom Citie's Train Station in Mario Party Advance. One of the games quests involves retrieving a ticket from him and delivering it to Goomba (an easy feat, since the Train Station is located only a few spaces away from the Goomba House. In another of the game's quests, the Shy Guy asks the Player to obtain Coal for him, because the Train's have apparently run out. The Player can find the Coal in the Vending Machines. Once this is done, he will reward the player with the Gaddget; Cake Maker.

Baseball Guy

Shy Guys of all different colors were playable in Mario Superstar Baseball. They are balanced characters. Ironically, their starting captain is Yoshi, one of their earliest enemies. They appear in Mario Super Sluggers, still on Yoshi's team.

Striker Guy

Shy Guys appear as sidekicks in Mario Strikers Charged. They are balanced players. Their skillshot is the Bullet Bill Blast. When Shy Guy scores, it does its own celebration. It runs but trips and its mask falls down similar to the Mario Power Tennis trophy award. Strangely, when Shy Guy scores, the mask makes facial expressions despite the fact that it's just a mask.

Smash Guy

Shy Guys also appear in the Yoshi's Story stage of Super Smash Bros. Melee. Although they are actually Fly Guys, they are called Shy Guys. The Fly Guys will fly past the stage. They are unable to damage players, but they carry Food with them, which can be dropped on the ground if they are attacked. If the player KOs a Shy Guy, they receive the bonus "Shy Guy KO". They also have a trophy in their honor.

Shy Guys in Mario Circuit from Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Shy Guys appear in the Mario Circuit stage, racing in go-karts in the game Super Smash Bros. Brawl. They are the only racers, and they will appear going across the top or bottom of the stage. If hit, the Shy Guy racers will spin out of control and wipe out. It is possible to get rid of every Shy Guy on the track, but after some time they will just come back.

Olympic Guy

Shy Guy is a referee in the Wii crossover, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games.

In The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, Shy Guys made irregular appearances as antagonists, working for King Koopa. Like most other minions of King Koopa, Shy Guys would wear costumes to go with the setting of an episode in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!

Publications

Shy Guys appeared commonly in issues of Nintendo Comics System, where they appeared as the, somewhat disgruntled, soldiers of Bowser; along with Koopa Troopas, Shy Guys appeared to be the most common minions of Bowser in Nintendo Comics System. In Super Mario Adventures, a Shy Guy, along with a Snifit and Flurry, appeared as an attendee at Bowser's wedding to Princess Toadstool.

Movie

In the Super Mario Bros. movie, the scientist minions of King Koopa largely resembled Shy Guys, possessing similar masks and robe-like clothing; to strengthen this resemblance, the Snifits, close relatives of Shy Guys, of the Super Mario Bros. film also resembled these scientists.

Allegiance

Shy Guys first appeared in Super Mario Bros. 2, where they were minions of the tyrannical king Wart. However, their first appearance chronologically was in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island where they were members of the Koopa Troop. It can be assumed that the Shy Guys that work for Bowser answer to General Guy. Since Super Mario Bros. 2, Shy Guys have been seen working for many other villains, including Smithy, Donkey Kong and Kamek. One Shy Guy (the White Shy Guy) is actually an ally of Yoshi. It may be assumed that Shy Guys are jacks-of-all-trades, and can work for whoever they want to or may even be mercenaries. There is a group of Shy Guys, Snifits, and Beezos called the 8 bits.

Physical Appearance

All Shy Guys (with the minor exception of General Guy) wear robes that can be red, pink, blue, yellow, green, black, or white. They are all fairly short and all wear masks. It is unknown what is behind them or if they are actually even masks. In the intro movie of Mario Power Tennis, Luigi sees a Shy Guy without his mask on and is shocked at the sight. In Luigi's Mansion, Luigi can use the Poltergust 3000 to pull the mask off Shy Guy Ghosts. These faces are pure blackness with two glowing yellow eyes. It is unknown whether this is what a Shy Guy's face looks like when it is alive, or if the Shy Guy Ghosts are even actual Shy Guys, as they are not actually ghosts. They, like the game's other generic ghosts, were imitations created by Vincent Van Gore. It is also possible that the Shy Guys' so-called "masks" are not masks at all, but rather faces. In Yoshi's Island DS, the sleeping Shy Guy's mask eyeholes are closed, supporting this fact. Also, the Bandit sub-species of Shy Guy have been shown to have the ability to change the expressions on their masks as if they were their actual faces. The picture shown when Bandit wins in Super Mario World 2 minigames even suggests that he is able to stick out his tongue. Also, Super Mario RPG's Shy Guys' eyeholes comically spin when the Shy Guy is confused, much like people's eyes do in cartoon gags; the Shy Guys of Super Mario RPG are also able to blush on their masks. Spear Guys and Cannibal Guys are perfectly capable of moving their mouthholes when chanting and singing, as Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island shows. Most recently, in Mario Strikers Charged, Shy Guys have been shown to yet again to be perfectly able to change the expressions on their masks. However, most information suggests that Shy Guy's mask is indeed a mask, and what he hides behind it is surely something very dark and secret. Early Super Mario Bros. 2 artwork of Shy Guys, as well as The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, depicted Shy Guys as wearing strange, Chuckola Fruit-like badges depicting an angry face. It is unknown what this badge represents; it is possible that it is some kind of emblem to the 8-bits, another Shy Guy-related element seen only in Super Mario Bros. 2. and The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! are also notable for using game artwork of the earliest forms of Shy Guys, making them tall, stout, and humanoid; however, the appearance of Shy Guys was later retconned to their in-game sprite appearance in Super Mario Bros. 2. In the first few episodes of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, Shy Guys were depicted as being similar in appearance to their game counterparts, though with one large exception - their masks possessed only two holes. They only had eyeholes perpetually in a scowling position. Later episodes of the show would have Shy Guys resembling their game versions more with three holes in their mask, all of which were perfectly circular.

Luigi is the only person known to have seen a Shy Guy without its mask.

The Shy Guy was created as an enemy for the Japanese game Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic, which was transformed into Super Mario Bros. 2 for an American release. Most enemies, including Bob-ombs, Snifits, and Shy Guys, were unchanged from the original Japanese version, and are now instantly recognizable as Mario's enemies, despite having been created for a game completely unrelated to Mario. Super Mario Bros. 2 is revealed to have taken place entirely in the dreamworld, Subcon, but Shy Guys are later revealed to have existed on Yoshi's Island since Mario was a baby, long before Super Mario Bros. 2 takes place. Since appearing in Yoshi's Island, they have become even more part of the Yoshi series than with the Mario series.

Characteristics

Shy Guys, as the name suggests, are very shy. They always have masks covering their faces; the only parts not covered are the eyes and mouth, which simply appear as black holes. Shy Guys can wear different colours, such as red, blue, green, yellow, black, white, pink, and purple. They seem to be an organization of mercenaries. Though they are bipedal, the earlier graphics of their first appearances made Shy Guys appear to be on all fours and oddly enough, look like steam train engines.
In Luigi's Mansion, Luigi could suck the mask off the Shy Guy ghost, revealing no face, just a shadow with two glowing, yellow eyes. (Note, however, that these things are not officially stated to be Shy Guys; in official material, they are called "masked ghosts".)
If the player wins any of the three cups in Mario Power Tennis with the Shy Guy character its mask will fall off, although it can't be seen by players, Luigi appears to be scared by its appearance.
Their attacks usually consist of simply running into the player, although some use slingshots or spears. Some varieties, like Snifits and Snufits spit projectiles similarly to the Octorok, while others may catch fire, such as Pyro Guy. They have also come up with some very peculiar inventions over the years, such as walking on stilts, attacking with toy tanks, bouncing on pogo-sticks, and piloting submarines. In Yoshi's Island, Shy Guys (among other enemies) could be eaten and turned into eggs by Yoshi, and it was common for Shy Guys to pop out of pipes until Yoshi couldn't make any more eggs.
Although Shy Guys almost never speak, they occasionally make a meowing sound in some of the recent games. Furthermore, in Yoshi's Story and the Game Boy Advance conversion of Super Mario World 2, they can be heard saying their Japanese name (Hei! Ho!) as they jump out of pipes.

Other Shy Guys

These are other kinds of Shy Guys that appear in the Mario games.

Anti Guy

A black (or very dark grey) Shy Guy, first appeared in Yoshi's Story where he would cause damage to Yoshi if eaten (hence the name; Black Yoshi and White Yoshi were not affected). He also appeared in Paper Mario, as an extremely powerful optional enemy which guarded a rare badge. but if given lemon candy, (a food made by Tace. T, the cook in Toad Town) he will leave and the player would not have to fight him to get the badge. Later, in Bowser's castle, if a player were to lose at the quiz, they would be forced to fight three of them together.

Bandit

A bandit is not really a shy guy. Bandits are enemies that first appeared in Yoshi's Island as tricky pests that tried to steal Baby Mario. They also appeared in Paper Mario as they would steal up to two coins on the first turn and then flee the next. More types of bandits appeared in the sequel The Thousand Year Door. Blue bandits were allies but they still had a bad reputation. Green ones stole items as well as coins and had slightly higher HP than regular bandits. Purple ones stole only badges, and unless they were caught after stealing the player's badge, the player would no longer have that badge anymore. In Yoshi's Island, red bandits were much rarer and carried red coins. Bandits also appeared in Mario Party 5. A bandit appears again in Mario Party 7, where the player has to take the star he stole from the Sphinx.

Baseball Guys
Only seen in Yoshi's Island, baseball guys were relatively harmless unless touched. However, if Yoshi were to throw an egg at one, they would either hit it with a bat or catch the egg and throw it back at Yoshi.

BeezoBeezos

Shy Guys with insect-like wings that first appeared in Super Mario Bros. 2, where his attacking actions depend on what color of garbs he is wearing. Beezo later appeared in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars as enemies in Bean Valley named Shy Away. A Shy Away (who had no more proper name than "Shy Away") also appeared as a major character in Super Mario RPG; this Shy Away worked for Valentina and attempted to keep Mario away from Nimbus Land by continually powering up the Piranha Plant boss Mega Smilax. The individual Shy Away was obsessed with his hobby of gardening.

Boo Guy

A ghost version of a Shy Guy. Appears in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and later in Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time there was also a stronger version called a Ghoul Guy.

Boom Guy

A red Shy Guy with a cannon on its head. Appears in Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time. There are also Elite Boom Guys, a more powerful version of the Boom Guy. Elite Boom Guys wear blue.

Mace Guy
Chain guys originally appeared in Yoshi's Island. They usually appeared in forts and castles, and served to guard key areas such as areas where the door to the boss was, where flowers were, or a large number of stars.

Chuck Guy
Making their first and only appearance in Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga, chuck guys bear a striking resemblance to spear guys. The only exceptions were that chuck guys wore purple shirt like things, they did not dance, nor did they have the indian markings on their masks.

Fat Guy

Found only in Yoshi's Island, Yoshi Topsy Turvy, and Yoshi's Island DS, in level 2-7. This gargantuan Shy Guy is, surprisingly, edible, and gives Yoshi eggs about five times bigger than normal eggs and cause earthquakes, which turn all on-screen enemies into Stars. Once the player gets three fat eggs, however, the Fat Guys disappear; however, there are strategies to getting a higher number of them (up to six). It is not possible to carry these eggs into other levels, but the player does get rewarded with coins for each egg at the goal (4 coins per egg). Because they are fat and wears red cloth and a black belt the Fat Guy resembles Santa Claus.

Fly Guy

Along with Shy Guys, Fly Guys are also common enemies in the Yoshi series of games. They appear as Shy Guys with propellers on their head. Special ones called "Mecha Fly Guys" also have wind-up gears on their backs which allow them to fly. They also appear in many Mario spin-offs, and are even playable characters in Mario Power Tennis and Mario Hoops 3-on-3. In Yoshi's Island DS, certain Fly Guys hover in the sky carrying coins or 1-ups at their feet. Hitting them with an egg collects the item, but if the player waits too long the Fly Guy may fly off-screen.

Game Guy

A Shy Guy specifically from Mario Party 3, he runs a gambling booth with various games to bet coins on when the player lands on his space. When the player lands on his space he will take all of that player's coins and a Game Guy mini game will be played. If the player wins, he will double that player's coins. A few mini games allow the opportunity to increase coins taken by 32, and one even offers a jackpot of 1000 coins.

General Guy

The fourth boss of Paper Mario, and leader of the Shy Guys. He attacks Mario with his army in this order: Shy Squad, Stilt Guys, Shy Stacks, and finally, himself. He doesn't attack physically, but instead uses the light bulb's electric shocks, and throws bombs. After he is defeated, he flees with the other Shy Guys.

Ghost Guy

A ghost of a Shy Guy found in Luigi's Mansion. Like living Shy Guys, they come in a variety of colors. To be able to vacuum them, the player must first vacuum their mask, and then stun them. They wield spears. Unlike normal shy guys, their masks are normally half white, half red. When the player firsts enter the Ball Room (Area 2), if left to themselves, they will dance to the music by pretending to slice each other's heads off with their spears. If you attack one and successfully suck it in, the other one will become "angry" and attack. When their masks are removed, only a pair of glowing yellow eyes are visible in place of a face.

Glide Guy

A Shy Guy with an umbrella protruding out of its head in Yoshi's Island DS. Using the umbrella, they have the ability to float on air currents, similar to Baby Peach's ability. They come in the same 4 colours of ordinary Shy Guys in the game.

Good Guy

A white Shy Guy that can be found in Yoshi's Story if the player has one or more missing Yoshi's. If he is in the player's possession when a level is

complete, he will appear on the character select menu, then he can be selected to go to Baby Bowser's castle and rescue one missing Yoshi at random. While a white Shy Guy is following Yoshi, the number of eggs he can bring with him is reduced by one.

Gourmet Guy

In Shy Guy's Toy Box, an extremely obese Shy Guy blocks the path to the lever that fixes the train tracks. He is named for his extreme love of food, but he doesn't know this. When given cake, he spazzes out in happiness flying all over the place. He is willing to help anyone if they give him cake, even though he works for Bowser.

Greaper

Appeared in Super Mario RPG. A Shy Guy equivalent of the Grim Reaper. They reside at Jonathan Jones' Ship. One is a member of the Three Musty Fears. The other two are Dry Bones and Big Boo. They want to play find the flag. Greaper's is behind the welcome sign in Rose Town. There is also a more powerful version of Greaper called Glum Reaper, it is located in Smithy's Factory. what kind of name is that?

Groove Guy

A Shy Guy that is only found in Paper Mario. They wear red and purple outfits with wingtip shoes, a big blue and yellow collar and a pompom on the end of their hood. They can make Mario dizzy with their dance moves. He's like a hippie. Yo man!

Limbo Guy

A type of shy guy that only appears in Yoshi's Story. Unlike other enemies it is off of the path way and can not be attacked (though they can still be forced to change color). They are also incapable of attacking the Yoshi's directly. They always work in pairs and hold a Limbo stick across the path way, forcing the Yoshi's to jump over it, else if the Yoshi hits the Limbo Stick, it will take damage. They also wear grass skirts.

Medi Guy

A Shy Guy riding in a floating device similar to the Koopa Clown Car, with a heart on it. Their only appearance was in Paper Mario. They don't usually attack but instead heal other enemies.

Mufti Guy

Shy Guys wearing flower pedals on their heads, Mufti Guys appear in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Island DS. A love-struck Mufti Guy named Petal Guy appears in Mario Party Advance as a character the player can aid in exchange for a Gadget.

Phantom Guy

A Shy Guy that looks similar to Boo Guys that appear in Mario vs. Donkey Kong and Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis. Like Shy Guys, they can wear many different color robes. If the player hits a colored switch that matches the color of a Phantom Guy in the level, it will turn into a block. The ones used by Donkey Kong in Mario vs. Donkey Kong are more powerful versions that are on fire, and that chase Mario. The ones in Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis are mechanical.

Pyro Guy

A Shy Guy that's on fire. They appeared in Super Mario World 2 and Paper Mario. In both games they cannot be jumped on so Yoshi must eat them or Mario must hammer them to defeat them. Mario could also get the ice stomp badge which will increase the damage Mario can do to fire enemies like Pyro Guy while allowing him to jump on Pyro Guy.

Rocket Guy

A Shy Guy riding a rocket ship in Yoshi's Island DS. Unlike other enemies in the game, these Shy Guys only appear in the 2 rocket ship segments (in World 5-4 and World 5-8), and also appear during the boss fight against Moltz the Very Goonie at the end of World 5-4.

Shyster

These are Shy Guys on pogo sticks. They first appeared in Super Mario RPG, where they have sword-tipped pogo sticks and additionally they have the Drain attack. In the first battle with Simthy, he can make gray versions of Shyster. Instead of Drain they use the more powerful Sword Rain. The Shysters returned in Yoshi's Story, but used regular pogo sticks.

Sky Guy

A Shy Guy held up by 3 balloons wielding a slingshot. Their only appearance was in Paper Mario. A player can target the balloons to pop them this will do no damage to the skyguy but will change it to a normal shy guy instead.

Snifit
Snifits made their fist appearance in Yoshi's Island. They simply walk around until they see you and then spit bullets from their mouth. There are also Snifaros, which only appear in Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time. There are also Spiny and Ice Snifits found in Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga.

Spear Guy

Shy Guys with spears. Their first appearance was in Super Mario World 2. They reappeared in Paper Mario on Lava-lava Island. One attacks Kolarado. They make an appearance in Mario Party 1, attacking the players' river raft during a mini-game. They also appear in Mario Party 7 as an orb that is thrown. If a player lands on this space, the player must roll the die to see how many coins will be taken from them and given to the orb thrower, similar to the Goomba orb in Mario Party 6.Spear Guys also appear on world 5 in Yoshi's Island DS and the 'King of River' game-play mode in Mario Party 7.

Spy Guy

A Shy Guy dressed in camouflage, with plants on its head. Its only appearance was in Paper Mario. They have multiple weapons that include slingshot and hammer. They will switch items when hit, the sling shot has no added effects other than different timings to the hammer which can remove one of Mario's abilities such as hammer, jump or items.

Stilt Guy

These are Shy Guys on stilts. They first appeared in Yoshi's Island. Yoshi could not eat them or damage them with eggs, but could still hit them. By hitting them once from above, they would become normal Shy Guys that could be eaten or attacked with eggs. They returned in Yoshi's Story. They reappeared again in Paper Mario as General Guy's second wave. This is the only time they are actually referred to as Stilt Guys.

Tall Guy
Tall Guys, as their name implies, are very tall shy guys. Originally seen in Yoshi's Island, when Yoshi would jump on them, they would flatten out, and spit out seeds.

War Guy
These Shy Guy variants resemble spear guys. Seen only in Yoshi's Island, they march in one direction, until they hit a wall or the edge of a cliff, which at that point they would turn around. Yoshi cannot eat them from in front, because of the shield, and cannot ground pound them because of the spear. In another twist, Yoshi must attack from behind or use a melon in order to do any damage at all.

Zeus Guy

This Shy Guy is dressed up as a karate fighter and is seen firing out energy balls along with kicking and punching. Seen only in Yoshi's Island, these guys can't be destroyed by eating, jumping, egging, or ground pounding. They are almost invincible, hence the name Zeus. They are known to be weak against Melons.

Super Mario Bros. 2/Doki Doki Panic: Common enemies (Snifits also appear).
Super Mario 64: Only Fly Guys (flying Shy Guys) appear and their primary attack is diving towards Mario, though they can also spit fire. If Mario jumps on them, he can hover by spinning his arms like a helicopter. In Super Mario 64 DS they reprise this role.
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island: They are common enemies, and come in many different varieties throughout the game. The Bandits also appear, and in the secret vs. mode, the second player assumes the role of a Bandit.
Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3: Same as Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
Yoshi's Story: They are very common enemies and come in an array of colors, but few variations. There was also a white Shy Guy who, if present at the end of a level, essentially gives the player a 1-up.
Yoshi Touch & Go: Appear as Shy Guys and Fly Guys frequently throughout the game.
Yoshi Topsy-Turvy: Appear as red, yellow and green. Some variant forms are also present here, including Fly Guys, Shy Guys swinging medieval flails, and Fly Guys carrying coins.
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars: Several varieties, attacks with a slingshot. There was also a flying Shy Guy named "Shy Away" who, instead of fighting, watered Piranha Plants to do battle for him. Later Shy Away is the key to getting Mario's best possible weapon in the game.
Paper Mario: Many variations can be seen throughout the game, especially in Chapter 4, "Shy Guy's Toy Box", where they are led by 'General Guy'.
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door: Bandits appear in various areas to steal coins or items (including Badges) from Mario. Normal Shy Guys also appear in the audience during battles, but serve no real purpose except for occasionally running on stage to cause minor trouble to either Mario or his enemies.
Luigi's Mansion: Some of the ghosts resemble Shy Guys, and cannot be captured until Luigi removes their mask first.
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga: Though there are no basic Shy Guys, several variant forms (like the Spear Guys) appeared.
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time: Again features no basic Shy Guys, but does include a variation called a "Boom Guy" (and the more advanced "Elite Boom Guy"). Its weapon of choice is a cannon.
Mario Kart: Double Dash!!: Appear as skating obstructions (therefore earning them the nickname Skate Guys) in Sherbet Land Grand Prix level. They are mobile obstacles to the karts, sometimes pushing them into the lake.

Shy Guy is currently the mascot and inspiration for the Phi Shy Guy fraternity, whose founding chapter is located at Washington University in St. Louis.

Mario Party 3: Appears as a character called Game Guy, complete with bow tie. He would host all-or-nothing chance games that the player would partake in.

Mario Party 4: Also appears as a host for one of the game boards. Here he wears a hat and a jacket like Indiana Jones because of the jungle theme of his board.

Shy Guy also appeared on the The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! for DiC Entertainment as a minion. He was played by Jeannie Elias who gave him a voice like Carl Foutley from As Told by Ginger.

In Mario vs. Donkey Kong, A Shy Guy is a news reporter in the opening cutscene.

Mario Party 7: Appears as shopkeeper at some Orb Stores. Also appears as Spear Guy for certain Orb events and the Minigame Cruise "King of the River".

Mario Party 8, a Shy Guy runs the candy shops.

While not referred to by name, the Super Mario Bros. Movie featured Shyguys, after a fashion. As with much of the characters in the movie (such as goombas being portrayed as large, reptilian creatures), the shyguys became larger, darker versions of themselves. When the Mario Bros. are originally captured, they are put through a sterilization process largely performed by men in full-body jumpsuits with masks reminiscent of shyguys. Later in the movie, Snifits appear (and are referred to by name) as garbage men; their bullet shooting mask protrusions being replaced with simple air filters. Unlike the Shyguys from earlier in the movie, they exclusively wear black, tighter-fitting clothing.

Super Smash Brothers: Melee: A minor enemy in the Yoshi's Story stage. Some of them carry food, which is dropped when they are killed.

In a trailer for Super Smash Bros. Brawl, a stage based off of Mario Kart was shown which featured Shy Guys driving by as an obstacle.

The Japanese name for Bob-omb, Bomhei, implies a direct connection to Shy Guys.
